Stockholm shopping - luxury
Shopping for luxury in Stockholm used to be a rather sad thing 20 years ago. After 1968 luxury was bad and cheap was good but with generation X growing up and getting their pay checks something happened and Stockholm now offers a fantastic shopping experience for anyone into exclusive fashion shopping.
It is the area around Biblioteksgatan, Birger Jarlsgatan and Stureplan that is home to the high end and luxury shopping in Stockholm. Start the day with breakfast at Berns Salonger before strolling through beautiful Berzeli Park and hit Birger Jarlsgatan. The first shop on the street is Gucci and then there is an almost endless line of international fashion shops like Louis Vuitton, Bottega Veneta, Mulberry, Max Mara and Hugo Boss.
An option to these shops is the mixed shops. The current number one luxury experience you will get by paying a visit to Natalie Schutermann with a mix of international fashion labels on the hangers, one piece more gorgeous than the other (and don´t forget to look for the shoes – an exquisite selection). Maruschka de Margo is only a few meters away and has a slightly more edgy and quirky selection of international jet set fashion. ABCD on connecting Jakobsberggatan has for years been one of the best luxury shops in Stockholm.
After a few blocks you will come to the square Stureplan. During the night this square transforms into a nightclub Mecca, since all the big nightclubs are located here, but during daytime it is still a bustling meeting point for sophisticated Stockholmers. They all meet under “Svampen” (the mushroom) and then move on for some shopping at exclusive shopping center “Sturegallerian” or a lunch at one of the many good restaurants out of which “Sturehof” is probably the most well known.
After your well deserved lunch break you can either continue up the street where you will find Versace, Hugo Boss and a few more shops, or you can chose to walk back towards Berns on Biblioteksgatan.
Biblioteksgatan has always been The fashionable shopping street of Stockholm. It used to be rather old fashioned but has become more modern in recent years. During Christmas the red carpet is rolled out to make shoppers feel welcome. The street is a mix of high end shopping and good restaurants. Diesel, Rizzo, Gant, Filippa K and Sand are mixed with Urban Outfitters (by far their coolest shop in the world) and cozy restaurants and coffee shops. “Wienerkonditoriet” is a classic Stockholm café and it is almost blasphemy not to stop here for a cup of afternoon coffee and a cake.
At the end of the street (or actually the beginning since all streets in Stockholm have their lowest number toward the Royal Palace) is the square Norrmalmstorg. Here you can enjoy some modern young fashion at Solo and the Stray Boys or more classic labels like Marimekko, Lacoste and New Wave. Another option is to just pass all this and go straight to department store NK at Hamngatan.
NK has always meant luxurious and exclusive shopping in Stockholm. It was initially located in the iron shaped building between Birger Jarlsgatan and Biblioteksgatan (and the founder lived in the other iron shaped building on the other side of Stureplan) but moved to the present address in 1915. At NK you will find a vast range of international fashion labels like Burberry, Hermés, DKNY, Armani Jeans, Mulberry, Sand, Hugo Boss and Bruuns Bazaar side by side with contemporary Swedish and Scandinavian Fashion, like Säby, Dagmar and Odd Molly.
If you have managed to get through all this in a day your feet will sure be sore so finish your shopping day by going to the champagne bar at the ground level of NK and enjoy a glass of bubbles before getting back to the hotel or out for a nice dinner.
Accommodation tips for you who like luxury is to stay at either Hilton Slussen with its fantastic view over Stockholm or at the more romantic Rica Hotel Gamla Stan located in the middle of the picturesque Old Town.
